Letting Customers Change Their Shipping Address After Checkout on Shopify

Short answer

Shopify has no built-in way for a customer to change the shipping address on an order they've already placed. Staff can edit it in the admin from the order's Customer section, and customers can edit saved addresses in their account profile or request a cancellation if you allow it. A self-service address change on the Thank-you or Order status page needs an app.

Key takeaways
  • Shopify doesn't let customers edit the shipping address on an existing order; only staff can, from the order's Customer section in the admin.
  • Customers with customer accounts can edit the addresses saved on their Profile page, which is separate from changing an order they've already placed.
  • Since June 2026, self-serve returns can also handle cancellation requests, with windows such as 15 minutes, 1 hour, 24 hours or until the item is fulfilled.
  • Apps add self-service address changes through Thank-you page and Order status page extensions and write the new address with the Admin API.
  • Billing addresses can't be edited on a Shopify order, and an address change only helps before the package ships.

Shopify doesn't let a customer change the shipping address on an order they've already placed. The customer has to contact you, and a staff member edits the address in the admin from the order's Customer section. Customers can edit the addresses saved in their account, and you can let them request a cancellation, but a true self-service address change on the Thank-you page or Order status page takes an app. This guide covers what's built in, what apps add, and how to set up a window where address fixes are safe.

Can customers change their shipping address after checkout on Shopify?

Not on their own. Shopify's order editing is a staff tool, and nothing on the Thank-you page or Order status page lets a customer edit the address of a placed order.

Here is what customers can and can't do natively, based on Shopify's help center:

What the customer wantsBuilt into Shopify? How it works
Fix the shipping address on a placed orderNoContact you; staff edit it in the admin
Edit saved addresses in their accountYesProfile page in customer accounts, after signing in
Cancel the orderRequest onlySelf-serve returns and cancellations, if you turn it on
Change the billing addressNoNot editable on an order, even by staff
Change delivery method (ship vs pickup)NoDelivery method can't be changed on an order

The account Profile page is the one that causes confusion. Shopify's docs say customers "can securely edit their name, email, and addresses on the Profile page." That's the address book. The docs don't say it changes orders already placed, so a customer who updates their profile after checkout may believe they've fixed the order when they haven't. If a customer tells you they "updated it in their account," check the order itself.

How do staff change the address on an order?

From the order's Customer section in the Shopify admin. This is the path every native fix goes through, whether the request comes by email, chat or phone.

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Orders and click the order.
  2. In the Customer section, click the ⋯ menu and choose Edit shipping address.
  3. Update the fields. If Shopify can't deliver to the address you enter, it shows a warning or error you need to resolve.
  4. Review the tax adjustment, if any, and click Save.

Staff need one of three permissions to do this: Manage order information, Edit orders or Fulfill and ship orders. That's looser than editing line items, which needs Edit orders.

Two side effects matter. First, taxes are recalculated for unfulfilled orders. Moving an order from Oregon to Washington, for example, can raise the tax, and Shopify shows the previous tax, the new tax and the difference. You can send an invoice for the extra amount or refund a lower one. Second, some orders can't be edited at all, including imported orders, Shop Pay Installments orders and local delivery orders, so their taxes can't be changed either. The full list of what the order editor can and can't touch is in our guide on how to edit an order in Shopify.

What can customers do in Shopify customer accounts?

They can view their orders, see each order's status page, edit their profile and saved addresses, and request returns and cancellations if you allow it. Address changes on an existing order aren't on that list.

The newest piece is cancellations. Shopify's changelog announced on June 18, 2026 that self-serve returns now let buyers request order cancellations too. You configure it in two places:

  1. Go to Settings > Policies, open your rule in the Return and cancellation rules section, turn on Cancellation rules and pick a window, then click Save.
  2. Turn on self-serve returns and cancellations for customer accounts, so the request option shows up in the account.

The cancellation window options are No cancellations, Until item is fulfilled, 15 minutes, 1 hour and 24 hours. Requests apply to unfulfilled items only, and final sale items can't be cancelled. Shopify suggests Until item is fulfilled for EU markets to support the right of withdrawal.

Cancel-and-reorder works as a fallback for a wrong address, but it's a blunt one. The customer has to check out again, any discount code may not apply twice, and the new order gets a new number and a new date, one of the reasons an order date can look wrong. For a typo in a street name, that's a lot of friction.

How do apps let customers change the address themselves?

Apps place a block on the Thank-you page and the Order status page, collect the new address from the customer, and write it to the order through the Admin API. Shopify provides the pieces; the app supplies the rules.

The surfaces come from Shopify's extension targets:

  • Thank-you page: purchase.thank-you.block.render is a block that renders only on the Thank-you page, the first screen the customer sees after paying. This is the best moment to catch a typo.
  • Order status page: customer-account.order-status.block.render renders on the Order status page in customer accounts, where customers come back to check on their order.
  • Order actions: customer-account.order.action.menu-item.render adds an action button on the order list and Order status pages, which opens a modal.

Behind the block, the app calls the orderUpdate mutation, which can change "the shipping address for the order" and requires the write_orders scope. That's the same field staff edit in the admin.

When you compare apps, check the rules more than the screens:

Question to askWhy it matters
Does the option disappear once the order is fulfilled? After the label is printed or the box is packed, a changed address on the order doesn't change the package
Is it limited to the order's own customer?Anyone with an order link shouldn't be able to redirect a shipment
What happens with partial fulfillment? One box may already be gone while another is still in the warehouse
Does it handle tax changes?A new state or country can change the tax owed
Does your 3PL pick up the change?Shopify warns that fulfillment apps and services may not pick up order edits

The last row is the one that bites. If your warehouse pulls orders the moment they're paid, an address the customer fixes 20 minutes later may never reach the packing station. Ask your fulfillment provider how they sync edits before you promise customers a self-service window.

How do you build a safe window for address changes?

Decide how long you'll accept changes, tell customers, and hold fulfillment for that long if your team or warehouse moves fast. A short, clear window is better than an open promise you can't keep.

  1. Pick the window. If you ship same day, an hour may be all you can offer. If orders sit for two days, "until it's fulfilled" is realistic.
  2. Say it where customers look. Put the window and how to request a change in the order confirmation email and on the Order status page.
  3. Hold orders if needed. In the order's Unfulfilled section, open the drop-down, click Mark as on hold, select items and a hold reason, then confirm. You can add up to 10 manual holds to one fulfillment. Shopify Flow can apply holds automatically, depending on your plan.
  4. Make the change. Edit the address from the Customer section and review the tax.
  5. Release the order. Click Release hold in the On hold section so it goes to fulfillment.

A worked example: a store that ships at 2 p.m. daily gets an order at 9 a.m. with "123 Mian St." The customer spots it on the Thank-you page. With a self-service block, they fix it in a minute and the order ships at 2 p.m. Without one, they email support, the email is answered at 1:30 p.m., and the fix depends on someone remembering to edit the order before the label prints.

Once a package has shipped, editing the order doesn't reroute it. Merchants on the Shopify Community describe the usual fix before pickup: void the label or cancel the fulfillment, edit the address, and buy a new label. After that, it's up to the carrier's redirect options. We'll cover the staff-side steps in more depth in a separate guide; for now the key point is that every option above works only before fulfillment.

How RetroOrder helps

RetroOrder Unlimited adds a Change shipping address block to the Thank-you page and the Order status page, so customers can correct a typo without emailing you. The Order status page block needs new customer accounts. Only the order's own customer can make the change, and the block is hidden once the order is fulfilled, fully or partially, or cancelled, so it can't redirect a package that's already on its way. It doesn't change the billing address or the delivery method.

RetroOrder Unlimited is $9.99/month with a 14-day free trial and also includes unlimited order backdating. The free plan covers 10 backdated orders per calendar month but not customer address changes. If your orders go to a 3PL the moment they're paid, pair the block with a short fulfillment hold so changes land before the warehouse picks the order.

Frequently asked questions

Can customers change their shipping address after placing a Shopify order?

Not with Shopify's built-in features. The customer has to contact you, and a staff member edits the address from the order's Customer section in the admin. Apps can add a self-service option on the Thank-you page or the Order status page that lets the customer correct it themselves before the order ships.

If a customer updates the address in their account, does the order change?

Shopify's docs describe the Profile page as where customers edit their name, email and saved addresses. They don't say that edit carries over to orders already placed, so treat it as affecting future checkouts and check the order itself.

Can a customer change the billing address after paying?

No. Shopify doesn't allow editing the billing address on an order, even for staff. If it's wrong, the usual approach is to add a note to the order and, if needed, refund and create a new order.

What if the order has already shipped?

Changing the address on the order doesn't reroute a package that's already with the carrier. If a label was bought but the package hasn't left, you can void the label, edit the address and buy a new one. Once it's in transit, you need the carrier's own redirect service, if it has one.

Can customers cancel an order themselves on Shopify?

They can request it, if you turn on self-serve returns and cancellations and set a cancellation window under Settings > Policies. Cancellation requests apply to unfulfilled items only, and final sale items can't be cancelled.
